Dear Book Lovers (readers and authors alike),
After careful thought, I decided to create this site to help fellow authors like myself get a foothold in the wonderful world of books. After years of slaving away, bringing our imaginations to life, polishing our work, and finally getting our hearts and souls out there, we realise there is one big problem - getting noticed by readers. Despite what people may think, our wordy creations were brought to life with the sole pleasure of bringing the same joy, thrill, and excitement to others as they did to us. With long side looks, fluttering hearts, and growing lines across our foreheads, we look to innocent readers to see what their reactions to our written babies will be. If a reader so much as glances at our work, we bite our nails in anticipation. When the reader picks it up, even the most atheist of us will cringe and pray to a thousand made-up gods that they will like the story and then ... the moment of truth.
It was crap ... or it was fan beep beep fantastic. 'So so' falls into crap if you ask me. And the sad truth is, fellow authors, some of us really do write crap - I've read some pretty mind numbing stuff and wonder how I wasn't bowled over into a coma! And so for the sake of readers and authors alike, I hope to help out a little by weeding out the exceptional books from the really good right down to the ... well the coma inducing stuff. This leads me to the rating system but since I made it up on the spot, I suspect it will change in due time.
My Rating System
In no particular order, I'll most probably consider the following when writing my review:
1. Grammar/Spelling (particularly for Indie novels) 2. Plot 3. Setting/Imagery 4. Clarity 5. Character Development
Each criterion above will be marked out of 5, summed and then averaged out. As an example, say I read a book and based on the criteria above, I rated it like this:
1. Grammar - 5
2. Plot - 3.5
3. Setting - 4
4. Clarity - 4
5. Character Development - 4
Sum of rating: 5 + 3.5 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20.5
Therefore the average is: 20.5 / 5 = 4.1
Final rating is 4.1
While I am an avid reader, I'm also a narrow scoped reader. That is, I like only certain genres such as sci-fi fantasy (young adult/children included), cyberpunk, steampunk, supernatural and horror. On the rare occasion I may read something out of this circle.
